About Me
Samira Lavei was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario to Kurdish immigrants from Iran. She is fluent in four languages, English, Kurdish, Farsi, and Spanish, and hopes to master Arabic and French in the coming years. She has extensive and diverse experience in a wide range of job fields including, administration, retail, legal research, fitness coaching, and non-governmental organizations including the Spanish Red Cross and UNICEF. Samira holds both a Bachelor and Master degree in Political Science and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at York University. She currently specializes in Women and Politics and International Relations, and her dissertation focuses on gender within Latin America. She has experience participating in international conferences and plans on publishing her academic work soon. She is excited about applying many of her skills acquired from her experiences as a consultant here at BeMo!
Outside of academia, Samira is a dedicated karate athlete and a two-time Canadian medalist. She has previously represented Team Canada at the 2019 Pan-American Championships in Panama. She has been featured on the York University Faculty of Graduate Studies website for her simultaneous dedication as a karate athlete and a Ph.D. candidate. Her photos have been featured on ShePowerSport, a platform dedicated to educating the public on the health rights of female athletes. When Samira is not training, she likes to give back her athletic knowledge to various communities in need. Examples of this would be, teaching female refugees self-defence in Spain and co-instructing an after-school karate program for kids in Colombia.
