About Me
Marcy Newman's own college search — back when applying meant ordering paper catalogs by mail — led her to the University of Cincinnati, where a swim-team ambition and interest in sports medicine gave way, after a broken leg and a change of heart, to a love of literature. A co-op program let her alternate coursework with real jobs at LensCrafters, Little, Brown & Company, and Simon & Schuster, landing her a role at Oxford University Press straight out of college — proof, she says, that finding the right fit matters more than a name-brand school.
Marcy went on to earn her PhD in literature from Miami University, teaching at universities across Ohio before joining Boise State's English department, with sabbaticals teaching at the University of Ghana, Al Quds University in Jerusalem, the American University of Beirut, An Najah University in Palestine, and Amman Ahliyya University in Jordan. She later taught at Brummana High School in Lebanon and Rishi Valley School in India, where she began counseling students toward universities in the US, Canada, Australia, and England — informed further by helping her own son choose UC Santa Barbara, where he found his fit in the university's College of Creative Studies. Her husband Murli has joined her in this work, adding his own cross-cultural experience across India, Singapore, Malaysia, and the U.S.
