A saxophonist who's performed with Ella Fitzgerald and Cher, Dr. Fish channels his ethnomusicology PhD into guiding college-bound musicians.

About Me

Dr. David Fish's path into music began with the saxophone in Tucson, Arizona, leading to Bachelor's and Master's degrees in classical and jazz performance from Western Michigan University, and eventually a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Michigan, where his doctoral fieldwork took him to Tokyo to study under the leader of a celebrated Shinto performance troupe.

As an Associate Professor of Music at Catawba College in North Carolina, Dr. Fish built a popular music degree concentration recognized as a "Best Music School" by In Tune magazine, and went on to found the Association for Popular Music Education. He's also an accomplished performer — having played saxophone with Ella Fitzgerald and Cher, performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and released his own folk-rock album, The Last Troubadour. Today, Dr. Fish channels that deep expertise into private educational consulting, specializing in the acceptance and audition process for college-bound musicians, and is a member of IECA.
