About Me

Josh Prater didn't graduate from high school due to a family tragedy — he earned his GED, started at community college, and eventually made it to the University of Texas at Austin, an experience that shaped his lifelong mission to make sure no student has to walk that same road. He returned to the Houston area in 2014, working in tech before his heart pulled him back to education; with only nine hours left on his degree, he pushed through to finish it and has spent the last seven years in the classroom.

Josh teaches AVID, a program focused on closing the opportunity gap many students face, and founded First Step College Prep to build a genuine support system for students and families. Under his guidance, students have earned over $2,000,000 in scholarships in a single year, and First Step College Prep students have received more than $750,000 in grants and scholarships since 2022.
