About Me
The college application process is one of the most significant milestones in a student's life, and navigating it can be a daunting task. My role as an educational consultant is to guide students through this journey, providing expertise, support, and personalized advice to ensure that students not only find the right colleges but also submit strong applications that reflect their abilities, interests, and goals.
The first and most foundational role is helping students identify potential colleges that are a good fit for them. This begins well before the college application process. Course selection, extra-curricular activities, summer engagement, and overall high school experience need to be considered early in the process. The guidance and support offered helps students through the process of discovering their preferences regarding academic programs, campus culture, location, size, extracurricular activities, and more. Here are some of the steps involved:
Assessing Interests and Goals: Begin by helping students reflect on their academic strengths, career aspirations, extracurricular interests, and personal values. They may use tools like personality assessments, interest inventories, or discussions to help students identify what they want from a college experience.
Identifying Fit and Criteria: Based on the student’s preferences and goals, assist in narrowing down a list of colleges that align with the student’s academic abilities and personal interests. This process involves considering factors like location, size, campus environment, and academic programs. A counselor may help a student select a balanced list of “reach,” “possible,” and “likely” schools to ensure a diverse set of options.
Exploring College Options: Provide resources such as portal access, websites, and virtual tours, notes from visits, and/or organize in-person visits to campuses. Encourage students to attend college fairs and meet with college representatives to gain further insight into their options.
Also available for assistance with special interests, i.e. athletic recruiting. This may include strategy on college lists, identifying showcases, tournaments, proofing/editing, assisting with correspondence with college coaches, editing/creating college highlight reels/videos, etc.
Once a student has narrowed down their list of colleges, the next step is to begin preparing their application. Discussions surrounding the understanding of the different types of applications (e.g., Common Application, Coalition Application, or individual college applications) and the specific requirements for each college. Here’s how they assist with the application process:
Reviewing Application Requirements: Help students organize and track the various application requirements for each college, such as deadlines, essay prompts, recommendation letters, transcripts, and standardized test scores. This ensures that students don’t miss crucial deadlines or documents.
Helping with the Common Application and Essays: One of the most important aspects of the college application is the personal essay. Provide feedback on college essays, helping students articulate their thoughts and present themselves in the best light. Suggest strategies to improve writing, ensure the essay answers the prompt, and help the student reflect their unique qualities, also assist in brainstorming ideas, structuring the essay, and reviewing drafts.
Letter of Recommendation Strategy: Many colleges require letters of recommendation from teachers, school counselors, or mentors. We help guide students early in selecting the best individuals to write these letters, advising on how to approach the teachers or mentors, and ensuring that the letters reflect the student’s strengths and achievements.
Application Review and Submission: Once the student has completed their application materials, we review the entire application package to ensure it is error-free, well-organized, and complete. Help students submit their applications on time and support students to confirm that all components have been received by the college.
We also play an essential role in preparing students for campus visits and interviews, which can greatly impact a student’s application process. College visits offer students the opportunity to get a sense of the campus environment, meet current students, and interact with admissions staff.
Preparing for Campus Visits: Advise students on how to make the most of a campus visit, including scheduling tours, attending information sessions, and asking questions that will help them assess whether the college is a good fit. Also guide students in preparing for virtual visits or open houses if in-person visits aren’t possible.
Preparing for College Interviews: Some colleges conduct interviews as part of the admissions process, we help students prepare for interviews by coaching them on how to answer common questions, present themselves confidently, and demonstrate their interest in the school. May also conduct mock interviews to help students practice.
After receiving admission decisions, students may face the difficult task of choosing between multiple colleges. We provide valuable support during this phase of the process.
Evaluating College Offers: Help students compare the pros and cons of each offer by considering academic programs, financial aid packages, campus culture, and other factors that were important in the original college search process. Also encourage students to discuss their choices with family members to ensure that everyone is aligned in making a decision.
Handling Waitlists and Deferrals: For students who are placed on a waitlist or deferred from a college, guide them on how to proceed, offering advice on how to express continued interest in a school and may help students consider other options if they are not ultimately admitted.
Even after a student has made their college decision, we may continue to offer support to ensure a smooth transition to higher education.
Pre-College Preparations: If interested we may help students with pre-college steps such as registering for courses, and preparing for the social and academic aspects of college life. This preparation can help reduce the stress of the transition.
Emotional and Social Support: We may also offer continued emotional support during this time of transition, helping students manage the challenges of leaving home, adjusting to new environments, and coping with feelings of uncertainty or homesickness.
On-going professional Support. Provide assistance with resume help for on campus or summer employment if needed, as well as interview preparation and follow up. Tips and advice on how to maximize social media efforts, such as LinkedIn and other professional organizations.
